After redistricting, Oregon’s new District 51 now comprises most of the cities of Sandy, Estacada and Canby, plus much of the countryside in between. No other Democrats apparently thought they could win out here, but I see this race as a real opportunity to try some different approaches and hopefully show Democrats and others that there are better ways to conduct these campaigns than the politics of division.

As long as we continue to allow private interests to finance the campaigns of our elected representatives, we will remain divided and powerless.

We can’t legislate private money out of our politics because our representatives are beholden to the private money that got them elected, regardless of party.

We must start electing candidates who only take campaign money from voters they intend to represent. While this may sound expensive and difficult, it really isn’t. The dirty little secret is that these races can be won for a fraction of what is typically spent today if you skip the expensive consultants and annoying campaign ads.

In this campaign, I will only accept campaign cash from the voters of our new District 51.

My campaign’s intention is not to further divide our communities, but to unite them in common cause. If elected, our first order of business will have already been accomplished. As your new State Representative, I will be able to represent you without being controlled or constrained by the influence of outside-private money.

I WILL Fight to Eradicate Crime.

We pay police to secure and protect our lives, property, and rights. Like all of us, police must obey the law and be HELD ACCOUNTABLE when they don’t. Police must be allowed to enforce the law confident we have their backs. We need to FUND, TRAIN, EQUIP, and RESPECT the police who serve with honor. It’s time to take back our streets.

I WILL Fight to End Homelessness

Like you, I want to help those who are struggling – but for grace, there go I. Widespread homelessness is harming everyone’s health and safety. Got rats? We need to NORMALIZE tough LOVE, COMPASSION, and LAW ENFORCEMENT instead of tent and tarp camps on every corner.

Simultaneously, work with the network of services to get folks into recovery or the mental health care they need. We need to RESET spending priorities; ELIMINATE double BUREAUCACIES (government then NGOs); FACILITATE JOB CREATION; any TAXES need to GO TO WHAT WE APPROVED them for. Are folks thrashing through your trash while yelling obscenities at the sky?

I WILL Fight to Empower Parents
Schools and teachers are essential, but PARENTS should be the PRIMARY
DIRECTORS of their childrens’ education – not officials. School CURRICULUM, teaching methods, BOARD POLICIES, must be FULLY TRANSPARENT and easily accessible to parents. Money should follow students into any accredited school. All children should have EQUAL OPPORTUNITY for education and all schools should be on a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. Our schools should be as DIVERSE as our children are. Charter schools are funded at only 60 percent.

We know WHAT WORKS. We JUST need to DO IT. Elect me, I WILL.

Kaliko Castille

Occupation: Director of Development and Communications, Brown Hope – Co-Founder, ThndrStrm Strategies – President, Minority Cannabis Business Association

Occupational Background: Marketing, Digital Strategy, Non-Profit Management, Political Organizing

Educational Background: Milwaukie High School, Diploma – Portland Community College – Western Oregon University

Prior Governmental Experience: None

I grew up in Milwaukie, the oldest of six kids in a working class family.

I went to Linwood Elementary, Rowe Middle and graduated from Milwaukie High.

I’m running because I know what it’s like to rely on food stamps to eat, and I know what it’s like to have mounting student debt. I’m running because I know what it’s like to get priced out of your hometown. I’m running for all of the kids who deserve elected officials who share their lived experience rather than just talking about it.

I don’t have tons of political connections or years of elected office under my belt. I’m not independently wealthy, next in line, or running as a hobby.

There are lots of reasons why I’m running — but the most important reason is because I’m a new dad who wants to leave my daughter a world that is better than how I found it.

I want her to be safe from gun violence, and from the devastation of climate change. I want her to be paid equally for equal work. I want her to be able to see a doctor and go to college without having to mortgage her future.

This is our chance to secure a better future for us all.

What Others Say About Kaliko:

“Kaliko would be an excellent advocate for our community because he grew up here and as a young father, he’s committed to building a better future for all of our kids – whether that’s investing in education or developing solutions to combat the climate crisis. Kaliko is the right person for this moment.” – Desi Nicodemus, Milwaukie City Councilor

Tooze for Oregon

Hello District 40 neighbors,

This is our chance to make change. As a fifth-generation Oregon City resident, I am driven to lend my life experience to helping our district make the changes we desperately need.

I will promote legislation to prevent drugs and crime from Multnomah County coming into Clackamas County; we are under siege. I will work to prevent violent rioting as well as the targeted harassment of people exercising their First Amendment rights. I will strongly support our Constitution as it is written, especially our Second Amendment.

I am a strong conservative who will support our constitution as it is written and especially our second amendment rights, which are under constant attack.

As a single parent of three students graduated from high school in our district, I will support law against CRT in our schools. I believe that parents should get the tax credit certificates for their children directly to go to any school of their choice.

As a local business owner and employer, I will fight for lowering taxes and supporting small business and employees. I will advocate for our sportsman rights to fish and hunt and have access to our lands and waterways.

As a foster child that survived the suicide of my mother, it’s a priority of mine to work on mental health issues and the foster child program that is in horrible disarray.

I have volunteered in our community for 40 years, own and operate Tooze Wildlife Foundation and have done many wetland enhancement projects.

If elected, I will donate my government pay to the children in our community.

I am for minimal government and maximum Freedom.

Sincerely, Daniel Tooze.

Occupation: Small business owner of a continuing education provider; Mother of fifth grader and two year-old.

Occupational Background: Insurance adjuster, Director of marketing

Educational Background: Marinello, Associate in Applied Science; Gresham High School

Prior Governmental Experience: None

Community Involvement: PTO member at Oregon Trail Elementary; Past PTA VP at Arthur Academy Charter School; Volunteer for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Little League, and Boy Scouts; Room Parent.

Curriculum and Parental Rights

We deserve to know what’s being taught to our kids, and should have the ability to opt out of controversial lessons. I will work to pass a Parents Bill of Rights to ensure every parent has the right to review their child’s curriculum, have access to copies of medical records, and the ability to visit the school to observe or check-in on their minor children.

Getting Serious about the Homeless Crisis and Criminality

We need to continue offering addiction treatment and transitional housing for those who want help. For those who use illegal camping sites as a base from which to commit crimes – we need to make arrests and convictions. I will vote to restore the rule of law, support first responders, and hold criminals accountable to their actions.

No More Lockdowns

For two years, we have suffocated under an inconsistent and overreacting pandemic response that has affected our children, small businesses, and communities. I will vote for limitations on the governor’s authority to curtail our freedoms.

Kids Over Unions

Like so many parents, I’ve had to juggle online learning for my fifth grader while keeping my home and small business in order. I will stand up to the bureaucrats and unions that have been slow to reopen schools, and make sure every child has the opportunity for in-person learning going forward.

Jeffrey S Hindley

Occupation: Manager, Training & Employee Development. Realtor.

Educational Background: BA in Organizational Leadership; MA in Theological Studies

Prior Governmental Experience: Washington County Homeless Plan Advisory Committee. Washington County Rural Roads Maintenance Advisory Committee. 20 years of County Government experience.

I am not driven by political ideology. Data, research, and best practices inform my policy positions and how they best benefit citizens. It is NOT government’s role to solve every problem, but it IS our job to provide fair and equitable opportunity for all who seek it.

A leader at the state level must be prepared to be fiscally conservative and financially creative in order to minimize costs and spending so we can best meet our obligations for essential services, while not burdening businesses and citizens with non-stop increases in taxes/fees.

  • A comprehensive Timber and Forest Management policy. Our environment is getting devastated by poor timber practices. We must reinstate common-sense logging, thin targeted forests, and create more fire breaks/roads to ensure the protection our forests, animal species and our air.

  • Legislation to restrict Metros’ areas of responsibility and give back power and control over public policy to the cities/counties.
  • Legislation to implement term-limits for elected officials and campaign finance reform to remove the corruption and money of special interest on our political process and our politicians.
  • Fund to subsidize the minimizing of SDC charges and land costs in targeted developments around the state so cities/counties can build ‘affordable single-family’ homes. We must support home ownership and help lower and middle-income individuals build wealth through equity!
  • Provide incentives to cities and counties to increase the development of master-plan tiny home communities.
  • I would support a thorough review/audit of all state departments and consider cuts to some non-essential services to better prepare the state for contingencies and policy priorities.

Help me bring common sense policies and relationship back to Salem for the sake of our State!
